Club Class Holidays versus package holidays

Let's look at the way that a tour operator builds a package holiday and analyse the associated production costs. In the first instance the tour operator pays a specialist to fly to all destinations and negotiate rates with hoteliers and accommodation agents.

Thereafter contracts are entered into and millions of expensive catalogues are produced featuring the selected inventory. Flights then have to be organised and contracted to ensure adequate transportation to the various destinations.

Once the catalogues are produced they have to be distributed free and racked at travel agencies with whom the tour operator has contracted. Staff are employed to service the travel outlets by visiting them on a regular basis to ensure that the catalogues are well displayed to attract maximum consumer interest.

Expensive point of sale and promotional materials are also produced and are given to the travel agencies to attract maximum publicity over their competitors. The tour operator then spends millions of pounds on national advertising and pays a commission of up to 20% to the travel agent to handle bookings. Further associated costs such as transfers and tour rep salaries also have to be included in the cost.

The holiday ownership connection
